After some early 90s experiments with revamping formerly awful heroes like Rob Liefeld’s Supreme, Alan Moore launched his own title where he could experiment with meta-fiction and all the complications of parallel universes and alternate realities. Tom Strong is a fantastic homage to the things one finds ridiculous and endearing about comics. One of my favorite moments is the introduction of a funny animal version of Tom Strong, complete with his black hare wife and conniving vulpine villain Basil Saveen: equal parts Brush and Fantômas.

Almost predicting the recent return of Captain Carrot and Zoo Crew to DC, Warren Strong also plays a big part in the conclusion to the science hero’s story. And he’s a big influence on Shockstar’s design.
