I felt sensation on this very evening, sensation that I thought I would never feel about things in my past and things that haven’t changed a bit. I was all alone in my dark room with a candle and possible I’m all by myself in this apartment. I sat still a long period of time in silent and read. I read, I saw and I somehow I felt everything. Then I just stopped and had it, sensation about my old friends which I had almost took for granted. I had sensation about Don Rosa.
How many times he have written tails about Carl Barks and how sensational he was for him? About how Bark was the ultimate master of Disney Duck and he just apprentice.I have never had so much thought about Carl Barks. He was special of course and I enjoy his stories but somehow I didn’t realize that he was there. Ten years ago there was one and only true master for me in the world of of Donald Duck. Don Rose himself.
I just read The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck companion by Don Rosa. I got it from my aunt for my birthday. I asked Don Rosa comic book but I expected Finnish editions and not this English one. I was so surprised that I didn’t know what to do with it. There was only some stories and those stories were not combined together(expect stories about Scrooge McDuck’s life of course). Now I took all my time and read most of it and got this sensation.
Don Rosa wrote lots of background information about these stories. How he felt when he started making it, how he made the stories, how he used real life events and people in these duck stories and other little things about Carl Barks and about he’s fans all over the globe. Those made me almost cry when I realized what I was holding. I was holding the treasure of my childhood and I realized how deep Don Rosa’s stories where in the end. The main reason why I loved his work was the deepness of the protagonists.
I have big brother who is about 8-9 years older than me. We both got our own Donald Duck magazine but he didn’t want it anymore when he turned on age of 18 or something like that. Still he always took my magazine and read it from cover to cover. We also had every Don Rosa album what has been published in Finland in Finnish. Even this day on we got this connection and we don’t have so many things in common. My two younger brothers are also big fans of Don Rosa which make it even more special. My best friends are not different either. Every time I talk about Donald Duck I will always say something about one of my heroes, Don Rosa and it’s more a rule than a fact.
I’m really glad that I got this comic book in my hands. There is always changes when you must make text for other countries but now I got something what is genuine(at least I hope it is).
I have never seen Don Rosa in person which does make me little pit ashamed because now I know I will never see him at all. He is an old man now and possible he does not have so much time on his hands. He wont draw stories anymore but he doesn’t have to. He have already gave us way too much of his precious time. I’m happy that I live on times when I know he’s alive and he maybe sit on his garden and feels happy about his life. I can see that Don Rosa is watching his life like old Scrooge did in his stories.
Most of the people say that they love Walt Disney because of his movies but I love him because he gave us Don Rosa.
I know this is liirum laarum for most of people out there who read this but I don’t do stuff like this really often. Also I think people don’t talk enough about Don Rosa who’s works are awesome. I think we all need some time for make our heroes bigger than a life. This is for one of my biggest heroes whose sword is a pencil and he was only a human.
Comics can mean a lot to people. :)
